Alliance Trust weighs outlook for UK banking sector in the wake of the credit crunch
In its latest Market View report, Alliance Trust says UK banks still have relatively low capital ratios, compared to their European, North American and Asian peers, leading to ongoing uncertainty over the strength of their balance sheets. On this basis, further capital raising cannot be ruled out.

Elderly suffering a rate of inflation well above 6%
Alliance Trust's independent study of age related inflation has found that the over 75 year olds continue to be hit the hardest by surging inflation, and the pain is getting worse. This age group saw their inflation rate surge from 5.4% to 6.3% in July. The inflation rates facing all other identified age groups have also increased sharply and the majority are now in excess of 5%, well ahead of the official rate of 4.4%.

Alliance Trust Savings has published a webcast and bulletin to explain to advisers the pros and cons they should consider when looking at investing in shares of unquoted companies in a SIPP. The bulletin and webcast also detail the process involved in making this type of investment in a SIPP, the taxation issues, including ensuring tax charges on taxable property are avoided.

Alliance Trust Savings reveals top investment choices for first quarter of tax year
Alliance Trust Savings, a leading UK financial services provider, today publishes the results of its quarterly Alliance Trust ISA Ranking for the first quarter of the 2008/09 tax year. The Alliance Trust ISA Ranking lists the most popular investment trusts that private investors have chosen for their ISA through Alliance Trust Savings, which excludes investments in Alliance Trust PLC due to its disproportionate amount of holdings.

Research report confirms UK's 'Financial Reality' has plunged to record low
Alliance Trust Research Centre's Financial Reality Index reveals that the financial well-being of UK households has hit its worst ever level during its 11 year study. The latest report that reveals families' financial reality in the second quarter of this year warns that household consumption will have to continue to slow over the remainder of 2008 in order to remain in line with the financial reality facing UK households.

Alliance Trust expands investment team with three new appointments
Alliance Trust has today announced three new appointments to its investment team that extend and deepen its expertise in key asset classes. George Renouf joins as Investment Strategist, Emma Gilchrist joins as Investment Manager, Property, and Jay Newman is relocating from the group's Hong Kong-based asset management business, Alliance Trust Asset Management (Asia Pacific), to take up the role of Head of Global Equities.

Pensioners hit hardest by surging food prices and rising inflation
Alliance Trust's independent study of age related inflation has found that the over 75 year olds continue to be hit the hardest by surging inflation - this age group saw their inflation rate increase from 4.8% to 5.4% in June. The inflation rates facing all other identified age groups have also increased and the majority are running ahead of the official headline rate of inflation of 3.8%.

Alliance Trust says fundamentals driving oil price higher
Commenting on recent oil price trends, Angus McPhail, Global Oil and Natural Resources Analyst at Alliance Trust said:
“Fundamentals rather than speculation are driving oil prices higher. Oil markets remain tightly controlled by supply and demand. China is increasingly leading non-OECD demand, which is currently more than offsetting weakening demand from the US and other OECD countries.

Alliance Trust Asset Management appoints new Director of Business Development
Alliance Trust Asset Management, the newly formed subsidiary of Alliance Trust, has today appointed Benedict Lawson as Director, Business Development. Benedict, who joins from Seven Investment Management (7IM), will report to Edward Troughton, Managing Director, Distribution and will work closely with him to help build and expand the asset management business across a range of products and services. These will draw on the existing strengths of Alliance Trust's established and experienced investment teams.

Alliance Trust Savings has published a webcast and bulletin to explain to advisers the pros and cons they should consider when looking at investing in commercial property in a SIPP. The bulletin and webcast also detail the process involved in putting property in a SIPP, explain when a mortgage is needed, and outline points to consider once you are holding the property in a pension.

Latest figures show sharp increase in basic costs is pummelling pensioners
Alliance Trust's independent study of age related inflation has found that the surge in inflation during May continued to hit the over 75 year olds the hardest - this age group saw their inflation rate increase from 4.1% to 4.8% during the month. The inflation rates facing all other identified age groups have also increased and the majority are running ahead of the official headline rate of inflation of 3.3%.

Alliance Trust helps advisers make the most of new pension rules
Alliance Trust Savings has added a webcast and bulletin to help advisers make full use of new options for transferring in-specie assets into pensions plans. Pensions rules were relaxed in April 2006 and the industry saw a flurry of last-minute in-specie transfers of assets into SIPPs ahead of the introduction of the single capital gains tax rate of 18% in April 2008.

Inflation rates facing all other identified age groups have also increased and the majority are running ahead of the official headline rate of inflation of 3.0%.

Alliance Trust urges those nearing 75 to weigh up carefully all the options available
Alliance Trust Savings, a leading SIPP provider, today urged all those saving for retirement to consider carefully all their options for taking income from their SIPP as they approach the age of 75. Alliance Trust also notes that the government and pensions providers should help clarify widely held misconceptions about pensions rules, such as that annuities are the only option for people aged 75 and over to take SIPP income, when this is not the case.

Alliance Trust announces its results for year to 31 January 2008
Alliance Trust PLC, announced today that its revenue rose to £82.6m in the year to 31 January 2008, from £68.1m in the previous financial year. However, the net asset value of the Company fell to £2,699m in the 12 months to 31 January 2008 from £2,832m the year before. In a volatile year, a sharp fall in stock markets in January 2008 alone when the FTSE All-Share fell 8.7%, erased gains made to the end of the previous 11 months.

Latest figures show elderly hit hardest by high food and energy costs
Alliance Trust's independent study of age related inflation has found that inflation hit the over 75 year olds the hardest in March - this age group faces an inflation rate of 3.4%. Inflation rates facing all other identified age groups decreased slightly in March but still remained ahead of the official headline rate of inflation of 2.5%.
